Opfield vs Nginx Proxy Manager and Traefik

Nginx Proxy Manager and Traefik are popular reverse proxies with automatic certificates. In Opfield, ingress is one part of a control plane: routes tied to the workloads behind them, served from several servers, under the same permissions and audit as everything else.

Who it is for

Nginx Proxy Manager and Traefik

Nginx Proxy Manager gives a server a web UI for nginx proxy hosts, free Let’s Encrypt certificates and access lists. Traefik is a reverse proxy that discovers services from Docker labels or Kubernetes and gets certificates automatically.

What Opfield adds

Opfield is one control plane for many servers, built so production keeps running and a team can share it safely.

One control plane for many serversEach server joins with one command. Opfield enrolls it, updates it and watches its health, metrics and logs.
Failover across serversWorkloads, databases and object storage keep running on another server when one fails. Business and Enterprise.
Managed databases and backupsPostgreSQL, Redis and Valkey, ClickHouse and S3 object storage, with private connections and scheduled backups. Personal and higher.
No open portsTraffic and private connections go through relays over outbound connections. Workloads and databases need no open ports.
Permissions and one audit logGive a person or a group one server, container, database or route. Every action by people, API tokens and AI agents is recorded.
AI agents over MCPOpfield is an MCP server. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any MCP client works under the same permissions and audit as people.

When Nginx Proxy Manager and Traefik is the better choice

  • You need a reverse proxy for a few services on one server, and nothing else.
  • Your services are described in Docker labels or Kubernetes, and you want the proxy to follow them on its own.
  • You need a lightweight proxy in front of something Opfield does not manage.

Moving to Opfield

Move one service or one layer at a time, and keep the old setup until each part answers through Opfield.

  1. 01Install Opfield and add the server that runs the proxy, or a new one, as an ingress Node.
  2. 02For each proxy host, create the Domain and the Route, and add access lists and a maintenance page where the old proxy had them.
  3. 03Issue the certificate through HTTP-01 or DNS-01, or upload the one you have. With the Cloudflare integration, DNS-01 works before DNS moves.
  4. 04Only one process can listen on ports 80 and 443: move a server’s hosts together, or use a separate ingress server and switch DNS.
  5. 05Point DNS at the ingress server, check a real HTTPS request, then remove the host from the old proxy.
